Atma , its nature.

Very Often ,we interpret  the word 'atma' as a bad spirit, almost synonymous to a ghost.but, its not like that,on the contrary  'atma' is highly sacred and sacred with absolute purity.

"Ahamatma,Gudakesaha,sarvabhuthasayasthitaha,ahamadischa,madhyamcha,
bhootanamanthaevacha "
The above sloka is said by  Lord krishna in vibhuthiyoga, the meaning of it is , 'Oh Arjuna', i'm in Universal Self   (Viswathma) , seated in the heart of all beings. So, i alone am beginning and middle and also the end of all beings.

In Vishnu Sahasranamam, 'athma' and it's attributes (qualities) are mentioned in many slokas. The 'Paramanthman'(the Ultimate) is referred to 'Viswathma' means the athman pervading entire universe.
Below mentioned are different qualities of Atma.
Visruthathma :The athma spreading the entire Universe.

Ameyathma: Athma with uncomaprable characteristics.

Samathma: Equally spread everywhere in the universe (Viswam) exhibiting the attributes equally everywhere.

Puthathma : The athma is ancient (We cannot judge how ancient it is).

Vrudhhathma: Athma which is  very very old .means That existing since long long time (Time beyond imagination).

Ekathma:  It is only one entity.

Vishuddhathma: Pure by all means.

Vimukthathma : Paramathma is the Salvation .

Trilokathma: This athma sustains in all thri lokas.

Prasannathma: Always cheerful  in nature.

Paramathma: The ultimate athma in which entire universe is existing (Suspended) . The ultimate destination is paramathma.

The anathathma (Infinitely existing with no boundaries, with continuous expansion) is the 'Paramathma' which has the sustaining nature of entire universe.

"Mayathathamidam sarvam jagadavyaktha murthinaam
  Masthani Sarvabhuthanaam na chaham thyeshwavasthithaha"

"The whole of the universe is created by me as unmanifested ,unimaginable, unexplainable divinity (Beyond the Physical laws of this world) and all beings rest within me. Therefore, really speaking i'm not present in them ".

Hence lord krishna, clears that athma is an extraordinary entity which has the creating , sustaining and destructing capabilities, pervading entire universe with it's mind, all senses, intelligence, cleverliness, acting (niravadhika) unexhaustingly .

        "Boothabrunnacha boothastho mamathma, bhoothabhavanaha"

According to the above sloka athma is, in reality is the reason for bhoothabhavanaha. Though the sustainer of all beings , the athma is the orginator of bhava.and the chaitanya(force of action)  in all living beings.Bhava originates from our Mind, hence inside the beings Atma works as Mind.

The same is referred in Vishnu Sahasranamam in the first sloka as

"Viswam vishunurvashatkaro bhoota bhavya bhavathprabhu
Bhoothkrudh bhoothabrudh bhavo bhoothathma bhuthabhavanaha"

The disposition of athma within the beings is called as 'Jeevathma' and outside the beings is named as 'Paramathma'. The athma within the being generates bhava(feeling) through mind and the same acts outside with universal mind.

The athma inside the beings acts with different dispositions , jeeva as sustainer, mind  as bhava originator, senses to look, smell, hear, touch and speak. Intelligence to act bhuddhi to execute . forgetting nature to erase memory.

This sloka explains, athma as time definer(past, future, present) expanded in the entire universe when inside the suspended living beings.originator of the feelings. when athma is within the living beings called as  'bhoothathma'  and when it is outside the beings it is called as 'Paramathma'.

"Matthaha paratharam nanyathkinchidasthi dhanamjaya
Mayi saravamidham protham suthre manigana iva"

There is nothing else beyond me , 'oh arjuna' , like the beeds in a chain , all the Galaxies, all the lokas and everything in the Universe are suspended in me . - According to Geetha.

The viswathma , is like a Giant magnetic field (beholding very special magnetic laws which are beyond our imagination not pertaining totally to  our physical laws, which sustains all the viswam in it (Entire Universe).
- My Interpretation

Vistharaha, Dhrudaha, Sthavaraha, Prakasaha, Avyayaha, Prasannaha etc etc etc. all these attributes of athma few of which exist in we human beings makes the difference between Divine and Human.

But the easiest way of establishing link with the supreme mind is keeping ourselves pure mind and pure thoughts .

Lord Krishna Says " One can escape this field to enter into the divine field(Paramathma)  by  two ways :

"Abhyasena thu viragyena "  : By Practice(Mediataion) and renunciation( Surpassing the dual nature).

When we all are born ,we all behold Divininity which carry with our birth. But as we grow, as we grow slowly divinity diminishes. to regain, the last divinity we should think  divine all the time, orienting our minds always towards the paramathman and attributing all our acts and results to THAT.

" Manmanamava madhbhaktho madhyaji mamnamaskuru
   Mamevyshyasi yukhthiyvamathmanam mathparayanam"
